From the very famous, but now closed, Mary Merritt Doll Museum that was located in Douglassville PA, comes this treasure of an antique hooded doll cradle.

This is an early one, and it is in superb condition for its very elderly age. It would be perfect for a larger doll, and measures 22 ½” long x 9 ¼” at its widest x 15 ¾” high from the peak of the hood to the floor.

It was hand-made from birch wood and will come along with two smaller-sized antique pillows with blue ticking, and a darling small hand-made coverlet that was quilted. This coverlet may have been a pillowcase at one time.

It boggles the mind that Mary Merritt was able to find cherished items for her museum long before the days of the Internet. She physically traveled the world to find beautiful, rare antique dolls, their furniture and accessories, and old toys as well.

Under the bedding I found a note indicating that this cradle came from Mrs. Ivy Smith in New Zealand!

I purchased this cradle at the well-known distribution auction several years ago that was in two parts, and I attended both. The auction was organized by noted doll and toy expert Noel Barrett, and the auctioneer was the well-respected doll and toy specialist Andy Ourant, both of whom have appeared frequently on the television program Antiques Roadshow. Please see the photo showing the auction listing in the catalog.

The cradle is in outstanding condition with no issues to report. It appears that it has its original finish, and gorgeous old patina.

Both pillows are fine, but the small red, yellow and cream-colored quilted covering has some loss, some holes and a little fading. I was able to fold it in such a way so that none of these issues would be a distraction.

This historic piece of early doll furniture would be an ideal addition to any collection of authentic dolls and accessories. If you were lucky enough to have ever visited this fabulous museum, what a keepsake this would be!
